Taking things seriously

It sure seems like a long time since I wrote anything here, or posted any new artwork for that matter. Life has been really busy and will continue to be for the forseable future, but thats not what I want to write about today.

Most of my paintings here over the last few years have been me just trying to figure things out and playing with different ideas. That ends now, for the most part atleast. Let me explain...

While in Paris with my wife on our honeymoon recently, we saw lots of paintings. Now, when I say lots I mean a hugely rediculous amount of paintings. Which is expected in Paris ofcourse.

To my suprise, alot of these paintings were similar in style to some of my landscapes or were works that I would have scraped had I done them. That in itself is not suprising, the amount of Euro's that they were selling for was. Some as much as 500 Euro's!!!!

This has tiped the scales and knocked me of the side of the fence I was sitting on. I've wanted to try and sell my paintings for a while but havent had the guts to try, plus, I dont know how to go about doing it. And I have no stock of paintings that I could sell, as I generally give them away or paint over them instead of spending a fortune on canvas.

And now we come to it. I intend to now build up a stock of quality works, probably over the next year as you have to wait 6 months before you can varnish an oil. So Im going to be spending more time and effort on each painting. I don't intend on making a living off of this, just something I want to do on the side weather or not they actually sell.

What Id like to know from you, because I have no idea how to do it is. If you do sell your work, how did you get started and how do you carry on etc... I know there are alot of you out there that do and may be skitish of giving advice but you dont have to worry about me providing competition! I already have a career.

That's right, I've gone and got myself a new camera. A Nikon D40x with 18-55mm, 55-200mm lenses and a 4 gig memory card!

As it stands now, I have around 700 photos on my camera. Don't worry Im not going to upload all of them at once and flood your messages!

They will be uploaded to my stock account!

Im going to take some time to organize, sort, and remove the inaddiquate ones. Furthurmore, Im only going to upload a few at a time, cant let it get out of hand afterall!

Some of the photo's are really quite spectacular as far as Im concerned. Unbeliveable closeups on the most beautiful flowers, birds, dragon flies, fish, farms, animals, ect.... Even some baby birds poking there fraguile little heads out of their nests. So Im really playing with the idea of making some available as prints!

We shall see what the future may hold!

What's Up?

Sat Mar 31, 2007, 8:14 AM
Life, Love, Work, in a painting slump....

I guess I've just gotten bored with the old lanscapes, and I just dont have time to go adventuring to find subjects. I atempted to paint a flower a couple weeks back, a frustrating attempt at best! Lets just say it's definatly one that wont make it up on DevArt...

What Id really like to paint, as I've said before; is figure's and portraits. I've attempted and had ok results but I just cant seem to keep it all together. I've done a bit of sketching and it always comes down to shading and fine detail. Its completely different from a landscape, have to find a way to change the mindset...

Anyway, thats all for now.
